Autism Carer Mental Health: Preventing Burnout for Mums and Carers

Two carers in conversation, holding coffee cups. One wears a black coat, the other a leather jacket. Indoor setting with light wood floor.

Struggling with autism carer burnout? Learn essential self-care strategies for autism mums and carers. Find support, manage stress, and prioritise your mental health while caring for your autistic child.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and I couldn't let it pass without speaking directly to the incredible autism carers and mums in our community.

Caring for a loved one on the autism spectrum is a journey filled with love and purpose, but let's be honest, it can also be exhausting. The highs and lows, the constant worry, the meltdowns, the never-ending appointments, the planning for the unknown... it's a lot. And most of the time, we just keep going, because if we don't... who will?

The Reality of Autism Carer Burnout

But here's what I've learned: running on empty doesn't serve us, and it definitely doesn't serve our loved ones. Carer burnout is real, and the statistics prove it.

Research shows that caregivers of autistic children are more likely to experience high levels of stress, anxiety, and depression than the general population. In fact, studies have found that over 50% of carers of children on the autism spectrum show clinically significant levels of psychological distress.

If you're an autism mum or carer feeling overwhelmed, anxious, or exhausted, you're not alone, and your feelings are completely valid.

Why Mental Health Matters for Autism Carers

That's why it's not selfish to care for your mental health, it's necessary.

When autism parents and carers neglect their own wellbeing, the impact ripples through the entire family. Your mental health directly affects your capacity to provide the best care for your autistic child. Self-care isn't a luxury; it's essential for sustainable caregiving.

Whether it's taking 15 minutes to journal, praying, going for a walk, doing some breathwork, calling a friend, or just enjoying a cold iced latte in silence, whatever brings you peace, do more of that.
