Just Start: The Power of Taking the First Step

Updated: Apr 11

How many times have you told yourself, “I’ll start when the timing is right,” or “I’ll begin when I have everything perfectly planned”? The truth is, there will never be a perfect time. Life is always busy, and there will always be reasons to put things off. But if you keep waiting, you may never begin at all.

Whether it’s taking a course, applying for a job, starting a small business, or even just picking up a new hobby, whatever it is that’s been on your mind, just start. Take that first step, no matter how small.

I know this from experience. I never set out to start a charity. I simply created an Instagram page to share my son’s autism journey and to connect with others in the autism community. I didn’t have a big plan or a clear vision at the time…I just knew I wanted to do something. But by taking that small step, things started to unfold. That one action led to meaningful connections, new opportunities, and eventually, the creation of Help You Cope. If I had waited for the “perfect time,” or not listened to the little nudges telling me to take action, none of this would have happened.

So whatever it is you’ve been thinking about, starting a garden, going for a five-minute walk, launching a creative project..just start. Take the first step today. No one will do it for you, and the journey won’t begin unless you do. You don’t need to have it all figured out. Just begin, and see where it leads.

The best time to start was yesterday. The next best time is now.
